Sea Monsters in 3D at Lozier IMAX (Review)

A nice little bonus to having a Henry Doorly Zoo Membership is seeing the Lozier IMAX movies free of charge! We took the kiddos over this weekend to checkout the newest feature, Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure 3D.

Underwater, you follow the journey of the dolichorynchops, aka Dolly. You will learn a little about when an inland ocean divided North America into two. There were some interesting tidbits involved in this story. Watch as archiologists unearth fossils of the sea monsters and other sea creatures that once exsisted in the depths of the sea. I found these parts to be interesting and there are some finds as recent as the 90’s.

This was my first time at the Lozier IMAX and I was impressed with the 3D animation. Sit up close in the middle and you will feel like you are right there in the sea. Little man was often reaching out to touch fish, trees, and whatever floated by him. Watch out for sea monsters hunting prey as you will see teeth right up close. Several screams filled the theater when a giant mosasaurs found a shark for lunch.

I found this to be a good movie for both adults and children but I found myself wanting more about the sea monsters. It mainly followed the life of the Dolly and only touched on the biggest and baddest sea monsters. With a 45 minute time frame, it definitely holds your interest the entire time.

Show Times: 11AM, 1PM, and 3PM
Price: Free for Zoo Members or $5.50 each (children under 2 are free)

If you are planning a trip to the IMAX here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Arrive early to get your tickets at the Zoo entrance – it’s usually a full house on the weekends and they do sell out.
  • If you have a refillable Zoo Cup, bring it along to save money.
  • They do sell popcorn, a large is $4.75
